My Mac freezes: how to fix it?

Close applications that are not responding

Your Mac may be blocked initially by a specific application. Sometimes, when an application is being used, it may stop responding due to a failure in a thread that has entered a loop. At this point the operating system will stop running the application that is experiencing the error. But in some cases, the Mac can freeze completely without the possibility of closing the conflict application. In these cases, you will simply have to restart your Mac by pressing the Control + Option + Command + Start button. Obviously, if you installed an unreliable application that is causing these crashes, we recommend that you uninstall it, as it may not be fully compatible with the operating system or it may be a malicious program.

Reset PRAM / NVRAM

In some cases, the Mac may crash frequently, although it has just started without running any applications. In these cases, it is advisable to restore NVRAM. This part of the hardware stores basic information about the operation of the equipment where it can be accessed very quickly. On some occasions, you may end up failing by having some kind of process that is not performing properly. That's why from Apple they allow users to redefine PRAM or NVRAM in a simple way. To do this, you must perform the following steps:

Shut down your Mac.
When you press the home button, you instantly press the option + command + P + R keys.
Keep them pressed for 20 seconds until it restarts once.
